Zenon Lis - relacja

An English resume of an interview in Hebrew that took place in Israel, as a part of the Polish Roots in Israel Project.

Interviewee name: Zenon Lis

His father was Jozef Reiner, his mother was Roza Wolfowicz born on 25.12.1908 in Krakow. Her father was Ziskind Wolfowicz.
World War II: His parents managed a restaurant in Krakow. In 1941 they fled the city and settled in Jedrzejow where his mother's cousin lived. His father worked there in his profession as a tailor. In November 1942, when things got worse, his mother took her baby, Zenon, and fled to the country while his father decided to stay. Over the next few years his mother used to wander with Zenon on her back, from village to village seeking work on the farms. She usually found work picking agriculture crops. In order to conceal their Jewish identity Zenon's mother guided him to urinate crouching down (because of his circumcision). When that was exposed the farmer expelled them in disgrace. They continued to behave that way while wandering about the villages till the end of the war. Later on his mother confessed to her son that in those dark days she had considered committing suicide more than once.
Post War: His mother tried to find out the fate of her husband, parents and seven siblings (Zenon does not recall their names), but in vain. Zenon was sent to an orphanage in Chorzow for a few months. At that time his mother met Leib Lis a widower whose two children had perished in the war. Since he had been detained in a labor camp near Dzierzoniow he decided to settle there after the war. He married Zenon's mother at the end of 1945. Zenon was moved to an orphanage in nearby Pieszyce for a few months and returned home when Lis decided to adopt him officially.
Leib Lis was employed by a metal plant as a locksmith. He opened a private metal workshop after a while, then he moved to the local radio plant D.Z.W.R. and later managed a kiosk. Zenon attended the Jewish School No 5 but since his command of the Yiddish language was poor, he was transferred to the No 2 school, then to the TPD school and finally to the Hanka Sawicka Gymnasium where he learned for two years till the family immigrated to Israel in July 1957.
Lis managed a locksmith's workshop till he passed away in 1959. Zenon's mother would in the future get married for a third time. Zenon went to a youth village where the trainees learned and worked, then he returned home and studied precision mechanics. At the age of 18 he was employed in a radio plant by the person who had been his stepfather's manager in D.Z.W.R. During that time Zenon studied to be a machine technician and worked at a central Israeli electronic firm till retirement.
Zenon is married, father of two and grandfather of five.
